In September 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War, the Polish Republic was divided between Nazi Germany (beginning of occupation - September 1) and the USSR (beginning of occupation - September 17). After the war, Independence Day was not officially celebrated until 1989, when the first democratic elections were held in Poland.
